Footnote Numbering Problem

When trying to number footnotes through a 300 page document, I find them resetting to 1 often. I have all the pages in one section, and have set to restart only in a new section. Still it continues to restart. Tried to insert footnote numebrs manually but it will only allow this on the actual footnote reference, not on the original placement in superscrip? I wondered if anyone knew how to fix this, and would appreciate any help. Thank you. MS

Someone reported a similar problem in the Mac forum recently. I had no idea then and have no idea now. If you are indeed referring to footnotes (some use the term for endnotes), have all the pages in one section, and have the note numbering set to restart on each section, then it's beyond me. If you have your text in columns, it may be a bug (the Mac user's notes were restarting on a new column).

What version of ID are you using? And what did you mean by "insert[ing] footnote numbers manually"?

If you want, you can send me the file and I can take a look, but I don't hold out much hope.

Footnote Numbering Problem

Dominic, thanks very much for responding.. Finally figured out that the program somehow separated into layers in my book. The solution for consequitive footnoting is to cut and paste all the text so that it runs continuously with no gaps. Somehow, the discontinuities from page to page result in the new numbering, even though I tell the program to not restart. A short cut is that I can drag a whole page up sometimes and place it on an empty pagebelow another page and the footnoting will continue. But often I have to cut and paste a whole chapter into the end of another, and then hit the enter key until it goes to the next page, and then the footnoting works.

Using CS2 4.05 the insertion of footnote numbers is via special characters-- but it only works on the bottom actual footnote.

Footnotes are numbered consecutively only within stories. They start again in new stories. That's just the way it goes.

Similarly, you can't restart numbering on 'any' place. If your first note is a '*', you'll have to use trickery to "restart" the next one with '1' if it's on the same page.

Hey, wait -- you can't even toggle between symbols and numbers! The footnote options are document-wide.

That's just the way it goes.

That is a valid, if somewhat defaitist, point of view. But it shouldn't have been a problem to re-define note numbering & style at least per story.

It's not defeatist and it's not a point of view; it's simply a statement of fact. In ID currently, footnotes are numbered consecutively only within stories and they start again in new stories. Whether or not I like this state of affairs is irrelevant to Muinuddin's question.

Sorry Dom.

I'm in the middle of a huge job with tons of footnotes, which requires all the tricks that aren't in the book. Just lashed out without thinking!

While I never set up the document to separate into stories, apparently it does. Is there a way to make it all one story, other than by cutting and pasting all together? Thanks.

How are you placing the text? I've never had a file break up into separate stories.
