in hopes of opening photoshop or illustrator directly from a indesign version cue file, i choose the 'edit orginal' feature. however, the desired files is displayed in the wrong application. for pdf files, adobe reader opens, and for images, the microsoft image viewer, or quick time opens. frustrating.

Do you have Acrobat (full version)? If not, Reader would be the expected program for opening PDFs, and I wouldn't recommend changing it.

The application that opens a file when click "edit original" is whatever program is associated with the file extension in Windows, which is the same application that will open the file if you double-click it's name in explorer. To change this you need to open explorer, then click Tools > Folder Options, the click the file types tab. Scroll to the file extension you want to change and select it, then click the "change" button in the details box and select the application you prefer.

InDesign uses the Windows file associations.

Open Illustrator, then use the file menu to open the file and save. It won't update automatically in InDesign, but it will update the next time you open the ID file, or when you click the update button as you work. The only way to "edit original" and get the benefit of auto updating is if the default association in windows is with the editing application.

I feel I should also say that while many PDFs can be successfully edited in Illustrator, it is not a universal PDF editor and you can wind up with really messed up files. The best approach is to edit the original document used to make the PDF and then make a new PDF from that.
