I have used Page Mager until now but I am trying to move over to InDesign. I use InDesign CS on Windows xP SP2. One of the problems in my shift to InDesign was that the "times new roman" font disappeared! This font is installed on the computer and available in all other programs but not in InDesign. However in InDesign there appeared a new font that is not installed on the computer and that is not available in any other program on the computer: "timens new roman ps mt", and even stranger (?) this font seems to be identical with "times new roman".

This is big problem to me as most my documents includes "times new roman" and as this font is not available in InDesign the work is hindered by a lot of warnings for the font being missed etc...

Later I also find that document mounted in InDesign originally having the font "Garamond" has been ascribed to the font "ITC Garamond" also a font not being present on this computer as far as I can find out. And (needles to add?) this font is not available in any other program on the computer.

Have anybody else been confronted with similar problems?

Can anyone tell me where the strange new fonts are localized?

InDesign has a picky and fussy way of recognizing and naming fonts. They are actually the same fonts: Times New Roman PS and the other one named ...MT. It is annoying.

A useful feature - and one which I vaguely recall from programmes past -
would be to have a user-editable default font substitution table. When
InDesign finds a missing font that has to be substituted, the substitution
should be stored and applied automatically - at the user's discretion - in
future documents. This may also overcome the problem that was much discussed
a month or two back of Times being 'hard-wired' into the the default
paragraph style and causing copy and paste problems.

Your experience may differ, but I have found that IDCS2, running on XP Pro, will not show both Times New Roman (OpenType version supplied with Windows) and Times New Roman PS MT (Type 1) together. If I have both installed and active in ATM Deluxe, the OT version appears (it's called Times New Roman in the menu and has the blue OpenType symbol). If I deactivate the OT version, the Type 1 verison appears immediately and automatically (no need to delete fntlst files), and it appears as Times New Roman PS MT with the red "A" T1 symbol. The new Adobe OT TNR appears no matter what else is installed and it displays as Times New Roman MT Std.

So, check what versions you have active.
