Discussion:
How to invert the layout?
(too old to reply)

Opening the Templates\Brochures\Brochure_Self-Mailer.indt file in Windows IDCS2 presents a layout with the first page containing top and bottom elements that are not right-reading, (obviously they will in print). Is there a way to invert the page to view (and work on) the elements and then return the page to its original orientation for production?

This is pretty basic stuff but my searches of the forum don't seem to return any hits giving a solution.

Thanks in advance.

In the flyout menu of the transformation pane you should be able to
select "flip horizontally" and "flip vertically" (or called something
like that, I only have a localized version of InDesign), this should
help you.

Thanks but somthing is off here.

I know how to transform individual object or a group of objects, but I'm talking about turning the entire page upside down including Master Objects.

I suppose I could turn my monior 180 degrees.....

I don't know why you would need to do that. In the print dialog on the setup tab (not the setup button) you can orient the printed page however you like including mirror imaging. That allows you to work right side up and then print however will work best for your printing environment.

Does that help?

Obviously my message isn’t getting through properly. It becomes clear if you open the template yourself and look at it.

It is a tri-fold layout. On page 1, the middle 1/3 is right reading on the screen. The top and bottom 2/3 are upside down. (They are properly oriented for the final piece after folding).

My question is how do you work on the top and bottom sections without having to look at the layout upside down on the screen? Once I’m done with the center section, there has to be a way to turn the entire page layout 180 degrees, to work on the top and bottom sections and then turn it back again. I haven’t been able to figure it out.

I posted the location of the template on my machine in my first message. It might help for you to open it yourself and see what I’m talking about.

It has to be something simple but I’ve tried everything I can think of and I can’t find it addressed in the pathetic help files that come with the product, nor with a book I’ve purchased about the software.

One more time?........ (thanks!)

AFAIK there is no EASY way to do what you want done. If I were doing it, I would make the top and bottom panels right reading and leave the middle panel upside down. I just work on the panels upside down or sideways if it only involves corrections. If I am creating for the first time, I will work on a panel as right reading, then turn the whole panel to the proper orientation for printing.

Perhaps some others have other suggestions.

Select everything in the panel and group it, then rotate the group 180 temporarily. When you're done, rotate it back.

Yeah Stan, I'm beginning to see that now. Since Adobe provided this template with the software I figured there had to be a way to flip it to edit the two panels that needed the most alteration. I've wasted a few hours trying everything I could think of since I assumed (wrongly) that there had to be a way to flip the whole layout 180 in place. WRONG! You can't select a group like Peter suggests because it rotates everything off the page rather than in-place. Also, I can't seem to find a way to select and group all page objects along with all master objects for the same page.

How the hell did they design this page in the first place? Sitting on their heads? :)

Pick the center proxy point in control palette or transform palette before rotating to rotate around the center. If you need to you can add a rectangle to the group defining the entire panel so the center of the group corresponds exactly to the center of the panel.

If you want the two panels right reading in the template, add a page frame, group everything and rotate the whole page, then you only have the center panel to deal with every time you use it.

You're right, this is very basic, and well covered in the help files.
