Discussion:
Relink multiple instances of the same image...

I've searched all over the web for an answer to this issue, but can't find it anywhere!

I have a document that contains multiple pages with 24 business cards per page. Each card is a separate image in a separate image box.

I need to be able to replace (or relink) all of these images at once. When I try to use "Relink..." in the "Links" pallet, I can only do it one at a time. I've tried every conceivable way to get around this, but NOTHING has worked!

Can anyone please help me before I put my fist through my screen?!

Thanks.

Are they all the same image, or are they 24 different images per page?

Could you use update instead of relink? One way to do that would be to move the original file, then save the new one in the old location, and give it the same name.

What version of InDesign are you using?

I was working on a document in CS3 day before yesterday with two instances of the same link and I wanted to change only one. Every time I tried to select one and relink, it changed both, and I had to actually Place the second one rather than relink.

Are you using the re-link button in the panel? I don't see any preference setting that governs the behavior.

Peter,
Thanks for the reply. They are all the same image (24 of the same business card).

I had thought about Update, but really wanted a way of doing it without having to physically touch the different files. If that's the only way you know, I can try it.

If you know of any other ways, please let me know. Thanks.

OK, I looked it up in Help, and it seems pretty straightforward:

Select any link in the Links panel, and click the Relink button
or choose Relink from the Links panel menu.

In the dialog box that appears, select Relink All Instances if more
than one copy of the same file is in the document and you want to
relink each copy to the same new source file.

Choose Show Import Options if you’ve selected only one link and you
want to control how the new source file is imported.

Locate and double-click the new source file.

Choose import options if you clicked the Show Import options check
box.(See Import options for graphics.)

Note: If all of the missing files are in the same folder, you can
restore all of them at once. First select all the missing links
(or select nothing) and restore one link. All of the remaining
missing links are restored automatically.

You needed to turned off "Re-link all instances" in the Re-Link file browser to do what you wanted to do. A new CS3 feature.

So I've discovered. That's what happens when you don't pay attention in dialogs you think you know. :)

Does anybody know if I can relink multiple images of the same image in Adobe InDesign CS or can it only be done in version CS3?
