Hyperlinks Not Showing in Palette

I created some hyperlinks using the hyperlink palette ("new hyperlink destination"), but they are not listed in the palette. InDesign knows they were created, because if I try to create a new one with the same name it says a hyperlink with than name already exists. How do I get the hyperlinks to be listed in the hyperlink palette?

A hyperlink destination is not a hyperlink. It's half of a hyperlink. First you create a destination (you've done that), then you select a source (an object or text) and then you make a new Hyperlink, joining the source to the destination. Only then does it appear in the palette.

PS: This is one of the more confusing corners of InDesign.

Not only is it confusing, but it's a problem. do you know how to use the same destination more than one time? I have the same link destination used for multiple text phrases and graphics. why do i have to have a new hyperlink listed in the hyperlinks palette for each one, even though it's the same destination?!?!? I'm at a loss, even after reading this and the help files.

This also makes changing link properties a nightmare. I had them all shown as a grey box and wanted to remove the boxes... so you have to go one by one for 20 or more links. two separate issues, but related...

You need a new hyperlink for each one because a hyperlink had two parts: source and destination. It's as simple as that.

As for the second issue, you can select as many hyperlinks as you like in the palette and apply formatting to them en masse.

THANKS!!! at least the second issue can be easily resolved. The first is a nightmare, perhaps Adobe can work on that for future versions. Using weblinks and having dynamic documents is a reality and should be easier to accomplish. Perhaps having a hyperlink destination as a text style would be one way to do that.

I don't understand how you imagine that could work. A hyperlink is a point
in your document that is linked to a specific destination. If you make a new
hyperlink it is another point in your document. It can't be the same point.

The first thing you would lose would be the ability to go to a hyperlink
from the hyperlinks palette: InDesign wouldn't know which of the identical
hyperlinks you wanted to find. Then what would happen if you removed a
hyperlink? Would that remove all identical hyperlinks?

As Dave points out, you can format hyperlinks in groups so the only
'problem' you have is a long listing in the hyperlinks palette, and I accept
that that can be a problem because in my experience InDesign can slow down
dramatically when it has to seek and identify a hyperlink every time you
select it with the text tool. But that's easily overcome by just rolling up
the palette and only opening it when you want to work with hyperlinks.

I am trying to create hyperlinks from the first page of my newsletter to the corresponding page, and InDesign indicates that this has been done, but when I PDF the document, I get the small hand appearing over the page number, but it does not jump to the appropriate page.

Would anyone know what I am missing?

Thanks,
Georgia
