Summary of the problem: were seeing hundreds of missing links for graphics that dont actually exist in our clients documents. They seem to be relics of some previous XML workflow. Link Information displays "XML structure element, not in layout." We need an efficient method of stripping out the unused/missing graphics.
Version: InDesign CS2 4.0.4
OS: Windows XP SP2
Full background: there are four parties involved in this recurring workflow: a localization team (which changes every time), a mechanical/design agency, a pre-press vendor (thats us), and an end-client. We need to provide our end-client two things: a printable PDF, and squeaky-clean native InDesign files.
Several times in a row, the agency has sent us files for a localized booklet (.INDB) containing links to 8 to 10 chapter/documents (.INDDs). When we do our pre-flight checks, we discover ~70 to 75 missing graphic links per document. The missing graphics arent actually used in the layout (see below). In the Links palette, they show up as being on page "< >".
The agency tells us theyve never received the graphics from any of the loc teams. Even the localization teams cannot seem to locate the graphics; they seem to be relics from some XML process long ago. Both teams before us just ignore the issue and move on, but were required to fix the problem for good.
Our only solution so far has been to relink each of the missing links to a different graphic altogether, one by one by one. Its tedious, extremely time-consuming: 75 missing links * 10 documents * 4 dialog box clicks per... and then we have to update the .INDB afterwards. (Then multiply that by several languages per booklet.) There must be a simpler way.
Again, the Link Information for each graphic shows content status as "Linked File is Missing," and page as "XML structure element, not in layout." Ive dug through the Structure and Tags palettes, but I cannot find anything useful.
If this forum allows outside links, heres a screenshot:

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
