Difference between InDesign Template versus InDesign Document?

Perhaps this is an easy question:

What are the advantages of using InDesign template files for your workflow over using InDesign documents for your workflow?

Currently we have read only InDesign documents that we use as starting points for working in InDesign. Is there an inherent advantage to the .indt format?

Thanks,

When you open a template it opens as an untitled document. Just a bit
safer in that you'd need to make an effort to save over the original.

Structurally the files are identical. The file extension triggers InDesign to open a copy instead of the original by default for .indt files, and the opposite for .indd.

Changing the extension will convert one to the other.
