Discussion:
Locked text in a page

I'm new to InDesign, and I have found that the text on one page in my document cannot be selected or edited. I've searched for any sort of command option that might support locking of text, but found nothing.

I *can* edit the content in the Story Editor, but can't in the main view. If I insert a page, the locked behavior remains associated with the specific page number, not the content.

I'm baffled.... Please help?

Check your master page. It sounds as though that text is on the master page. There is a bug that will cause this to happen inadvertently if you're working with long documents (more than 68 pages, usually, although there have been reports of it happening in documents with fewer pages -- could this be your problem?

How are you selecting the text to edit it in the story editor?

Dave,

There is no text on the master pages, apart from my small frames for page numbers.

I tried your export in interchange format trick, with no success. Then tried exporting tagged text, created a new file, and placed the tagged text in that new file. That worked, although it leaves me with some work to do in setting up my B-Master pages, and a few other minor tasks that were lost in the translation.

Ken,

I select the pqage follwing the page on which I cannot select any text, and then open the story editor. Then I page up in the story editor, and the text from the locked page is there, editable.

Is the frame in question on a locked layer (different from the layer used on the adjacent page)? Text on locked layers is still editable, but the text itself and the frame it is in can't be directly accessed -- you can get at it in the way you described, though.

Ah yes, that's how you get in. I had wondered about a locked layer but you
can't select a text frame for editing if its layer's locked, which is why I
asked how he was selecting it. I wasn't thinking through to the story
running on to another page where you could get in.

No, there's only one layer defined. Also, I can select the frame, but not the text inside it.

There's only the one layer, so it is not locked. At this point, it's a matter of curiosity, as I have recreated the file, as described earlier -- thankfully, it was only about 20 pages.

OK, I have to say that thought never occurred to me. But it was the problem. No idea how I wound up with a frame on top of the original frame.

Thanks!

Have you tried moving the frame after you were able to select it? It sounds as though you have an identically size frame sitting precisely over the top of the text you can't get at.
