Cannot open PDF Library

I am using a borrowed computer with a different version of inDesign to the one I'm used to, whilst the owner is on holiday and my PC is having an upgrade. When I try to create the PDF it says "PDF Library failed to initialize."
I Googled for PDF Library and don't really understand what it does and why I need it, when I didn't before. I'm reluctant to download it and install on a computer that isn't mine.
Any advice appreciated.

That's a pretty serious error. The PDF library is the method by which InDesign exports PDF files.

You can work around it by printing to PDF instead, but you will lose live transparency and layering, if you need them.

Thanks for that, I don't need layering and don't know what live transparency is. (I only use inDesign once a month, so am still a bit of a dummy! Actually very much a dummy.)
Do you think I should download PDF Library then? I mean if that is the way inDesign exports PDF files, it must surely be on my friend's installation. Will downloading and reinstalling screw anything up?

Have you tried just re-starting the computer?

I found an old thread that had the same problem, and that seemed to be a temporary fix. Something more permanent will probably require a re-installation of the whole application, which you should not undertake on someone else's machine.

Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow morning - near midnight here!

I'm very happy, Peter. It worked perfectly this morning. Many thanks. M
