Use facing pages and only put the auto page number on the right page.

I'm reading this a little differently, Bob. I think the OP means that only right pages should have numbers, but also that they should have all the numbers, 1,2,3... not just the odd ones. If that's the case, and I surely hope it isn't, I don't believe you can do it automatically, except perhaps by script, but I confess I have no clear idea how that would work either.

unfortunately, it is the case. i don't want the even pages to be counted.. it seems that this is impossible.

You could number them "manually" after the project is finalized.

By manually, I don't mean add each number to each page individually! LOL.

I mean, make a text file with your numbers in individual paragraphs, "1
^p 2 ^p 3 ^p etc." ... then flow the text into a layer on your
right-hand page, so that each paragraph starts on the next page via a
par.style attribute or just the size of your threaded text frame.

You would have to do this as a final step in doc prep, because otherwise
you'd have to adjust every time your page count changes.

But this way, you can number right-hand pages 1, 2, 3 relatively easily.

I'm most curious why you'd want to do this. But it's not so difficult.

I'm glad to see the previous post, and will expand a bit if you don't mind.

First, create a paragraph style for the page number using any formatting you like, but be sure to include as part of the style that the paragraph starts in a new frame (under the "Keep" options) so your numbers will advance from page to page.

Create a frame on the right-hand master page for the page number and apply your new style to the frame.(You may find you need to select the style in the palette when you auto-flow, as well).

Place your number list using auto-flow.

As mentioned before, you should do this after the page count is locked down. If you make your list with more numbers than you need, additional pages will be added to your file, so be precise.

Just to be safe, I think I'd do this to a copy of the document in case anything goes wrong.

And to expand a bit further...

Place your number list using auto-flow.

This means: hold ctrl when placing the text into the master frame, which adds as many pages as are needed to place the entire text.

If you hold ctrl-alt instead InDesign will fill only the existing pages, so that the warning "additional pages will be added to your file, so be precise. " is no longer necessary.
