I'm using InDesign CS2, windows SP2

If I create an empty doc, create a text frame, type "text text" in Arial (for example), make the second "text" small caps and export to PDF (1.4) the text in small caps appears as a series of rectangles with a cross when I load the file in acrobat or illustrator...

It makes no difference if I modify the font embedding options.
Very strange.
If I change the font to Adobe Caslon Pro, the problem goes away

I don't see this problem with Arial. I don't have the Zapf Chancery here on my machine, but as I recall it is a scipt font; making small caps would give a strange effect I think.

Be aware that Arial (and as far as I know all other fonts included with Windows) has no real small caps, so what you get (if you get it) is fake small caps. The Adobe caslon Pro has real small caps.

Do the Arial small caps show on screen? if yes, they should print when exporting to PDF.

On screen the small caps are fine within InDesign, but not within Acrobat. The problem occurs with many Type 1 flavoured opentype fonts that don't have real small caps (I picked zapf chancery at random). I do in fact want the fake small caps.
If I print to the acrobat PDF writer.... it works. The problem is only with export.

Janusz,

The first thing I would suggest is (after closing ID) search you hard drive for files 'Adobe*.lst'. Delete them all, they will automatically be recreated.

Teus,

Thanks for your help,
I tried removing the .lst files and this did not correct the problem
Given that you did not have any problems with small caps, I tried reinstalling ID and lo and behold the problem disappeared.
So it was in fact an installation problem.

Next time just toss out the preference file for ID... Then if that doesn't work you can do another install.
