Discussion:
Indesign doesn't export CMYK PDF's (only sRGB)!

Hello!

I'm quite new to InDesign so I might just be missing something very important here, or else something is really hanky!

I have an indesign document (a calendar) that I whish to send to the printer which uses CMYK printers. They tell me the best way to send them the material is by exporting to PDF. No big surprises here. What does surprise me, though is that whatever options I use in the PDF export dialog, Indesign ALWAYS attaches an sRGB IEC61966-2.1 Color profile to the PDF file. I've tried everything (i think) when exporting.

I would like to export the PDF to CMYK color using the Euroscale Coated v2 ICC-profile, but it just doesn't happen. The color workspace is Euro Coated 2, and so are all the images in the calendar (imported as PSD's). I've only got four swatches which are all CMYK Process colors.

What am I doing wrong here. Why does InDesign attach this frickin' sRGB profile to the PDF?

Very many thanks in advance!

What version of InDesign? What are the EXACT export settings?

Version is CS2

Export settings
Standard: None (I have tried PDF/X-1a:01 and 03)
Marks, all
Color conversions: Conert to destination (have also tried "Preserve numbers)
Destination: Euroscale coated v2
Profile inclusion: Include destination profile

The funny thing is that no matter which profile I choose (eg. Adobe RGB 1998), Bridge always says that the color profile is that same sRGB. In Adobe Bridge, under Metadata it says "Color profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1.

As I said, all the linked images are in CMYK Euroscale coated v2, and when I view them in Adobe Bridge that's just what it says.

Choose the press preset and see what you get.

Are you saying that all of youy CMYK images are being converted to RGB?
Can you post one of these PDFs somewhere?

This is one of the pages of the calendar. Adobe bridge tells me this pdf's color profile is sRGB, although I've exported it with the above settings. What's strange is that I cannot see what the Color mode is. I normally can see that as well...

The only thing that I see that's odd is that the black text has been
converted to 4/C. Without the exact PDF export settings it's pretty hard
to tell why that's happening.

Here's what I'd like you to try. Open the photo in Photoshop and resave
it with no profile attached. Make sure that there are no profiles
attached to any CMYK images or artwork.

Then export the PDF again, this time using the default press setting.

Ok, I tried ´what you described above, no luck. Hell, I even tried exporting a blank document to CMYK Pdf and it doesn't work. Is it possible that the problem is somewhere else than in Indesign. Could this problem be windowsrelated?

I don't know what's going on. I only know that using those settings here
along with never using color profiles on CMYK has produces perfect PDFs
for me every time.

Add to the fact that nobody else is chiming in here to agree that it's a
problem and I have to guess that you've got something set up wrong
somewhere.

I still suspect a color management problem. Just for kicks change
everything to US Prepress defaults to see what you wind up with.
